The County of Bucks, in partnership with United Way of Bucks County, has once again proclaimed March as ALICE Awareness Month. This effort shines a light on the hardworking yet financially strained households that fall into the ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) category.
“In so doing, we commend United Way of Bucks County and the work they do to ensure the security and well-being of our residents. We hope that this recognition sparks greater community involvement and encourages collective action to address the obstacles faced by ALICE residents in our county,” the proclamation, signed by the Bucks County Commissioners, states.
According to United Way, 27% of Bucks County residents are ALICE. They earn more than the Federal Poverty Level yet struggle to afford the basic cost of living. These families often live paycheck to paycheck, making too much to qualify for most assistance, but too little to weather a financial crisis.
“Too many essential workers in Bucks County are working full-time – sometimes juggling multiple jobs – yet still struggling to afford the basics,” said Marissa Christie, President & CEO at United Way of Bucks County. “ALICE households are typically our frontline workers, powering our community. When they are unable to remain stable and stably employed, it’s a community-wide challenge. We’re grateful to our County Commissioners for recognizing this.”
United Way of Bucks County serves thousands of ALICE families, 36% of whom are healthcare workers. ALICE includes the frontline workers our community depends on every day – paramedics answering 911 calls, teacher’s aides helping children learn, and social workers assisting older residents through difficult times.
Local Banks Stand United with ALICE
